Airex Energy starts construction of its biomass torrefaction plant in Becancour, Quebec

Construction of the Airex Energy biomass torrefaction plant is now underway at Laprade industrial park in Becancour, Qc. Using Airex’s patented CarbonFX technology, the plant will have an annual production capacity of 15,000 tons. The facility is well situated near the St-Lawrence Seaway, in an area known for its abundant forest resources and rich pulp and paper industry heritage. Designed to showcase CarbonFX technology, the manufacturing plant will produce white pellets, biocoal pellets, biochar and biocoke.

Inside the plant

Activity at the site began in early April and construction is slated for completion by summer 2015. Progress to date includes leasehold improvements and site preparation to house machinery and equipment. The cost of the project is estimated at $ 9.9 million with funding provided by the Quebec and federal governments. Support from the Province of Quebec will come from the Ministère de l'Énergie et des Ressources naturelles by way of their Technoclimat program for an amount of $2.6M, and from the Ministère de l'Économie, de l'Innovation et des Exportations by means of their Fonds de diversification économique du Centre-du-Québec et de la Mauricie for an amount of $1.75M. Federal funding of $ 2.7 million will come from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC). Airex Energy is supported by their strategic partner Lauzon Recycled Wood Energy Inc.
